New Year’s Eve 2017

Over the Christmas period, the vast majority of the TfL network is open. Until the beginning of January 2018, some events, service changes and planned works may affect your journey. This page contains travel advice for New Year’s Eve, Sunday 31 December.

Large crowds are expected in central London on New Year’s Eve. The service changes and road closures implemented will help the celebrations run smoothly. These include:

  • Free travel on TfL’s network between 23:45 and 04:30
  • Tube: Normal Sunday service, although some Tube stations will be busier than normal and others will become exit-only, this is still the best way to get around – services run throughout the night
  • Buses: Sunday service, diversions in central London from around 14:00 – some day routes run into the night
  • London Overground: Sunday service, no service on some lines and some services run throughout the night
  • Driving: The Congestion Charge and T-Charge won’t apply. Planned road works, including the A1 Holloway Road and road closures in central London for New Year’s Eve celebrations
  • DLR: Services run throughout the night
  • TfL Rail: No service on the entire line. Replacement buses will run throughout the night calling at all stations (except Liverpool Street and Maryland), as well as Newbury Park for the Central line
  • Trams: Sunday service until last scheduled tram followed by an all-night service
  • Taxis: An extra £4 per journey after 20:00
  • Cycling: Some docking stations in central London are suspended
  • Emirates Air Line: Open as normal between 09:00-21:00
  • National Rail: Planned industrial action on South Western Railway and major works affecting Southeastern, Thameslink and Southern customers

New Year’s Eve fireworks

The Mayor of London’s annual fireworks celebration takes place by the London Eye on The Queen’s Walk.

This is a ticketed event and there will be no viewing areas from bridges outside the ticketed area.

Tickets are now sold out. If you have a ticket, you’re reminded:

  • To arrive at the correct side of the river for your viewing area, as river crossings will be limited from the afternoon
  • Public transport is to best way to get around, although some buses will be diverted or finish early

Free travel

Between 23:45 and 04:30, you can travel free on Transport for London’s network. This includes the Tube, London Overground, buses, the DLR and trams.

Tube

A normal Sunday service and all night travel.

Tube & Rail will be the best way to get around on the day, although stations in and around central London will be very busy and have different arrangements in place in the run up to and after midnight.

Getting around

Some Tube stations will need to close completely or for periods at a time for crowd control and safety. Changes include:

Exit only or closed stations:

  • Blackfriars Tube station will be exit only from 21:30
  • Chalk Farm Tube station will close with trains not stopping from 21:00. If travelling after this time, get off at Camden Town – a 12 minute walk away
  • Charing Cross Tube station will close with trains not stopping from 19:00
  • Covent Garden Tube station will be exit only from 19:00
  • Embankment Tube station:
    • The riverside exit will close at 14:00
    • The station will close with trains not stopping from 23:30 until around 00:15 on Monday 1 January
  • Lambeth North Tube station will close with trains not stopping from 23:30
  • Leicester Square Tube station will be exit and interchange only from 20:00. It will then close with trains not stopping from 23:30
  • Piccadilly Circus will close with trains not stopping from 23:30
  • Westminster Tube station:
    • Exits 2 and 3 to Bridge Street will close at 16:00
    • The whole station will close with trains not stopping from 21:30
  • Southwark Tube station will be exit only from 23:45

Stations will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.

Tube stations with queuing systems:

  • Camden Town, St James’s Park, Victoria and Waterloo Tube stations will be open, however, they are expected to be extremely busy with managed queuing systems in place.

TfL Rail

No services today (until Monday 1 January 2018).

Replacement buses will run:

  • Approximately every 15 minutes between Chadwell Heath and Shenfield, calling at: Romford, Gidea Park, Harold Wood, Brentwood as well as Newbury Park (for the Central line)
  • Approximately every 10 minutes between Stratford and Romford, calling at: Forest Gate, Manor Park, Ilford, Seven Kings, Goodmayes and Chadwell Heath

For Maryland, please walk or use local buses to/from Stratford

Rail replacement buses will run approximately every 30 minutes throughout the night on New Year’s Eve.

London Overground

Free New Year’s Eve travel will apply to London Overground services between 23:45 until 04:30. London Overground will run a normal Sunday service throughout the day on most open routes and an overnight service on the following lines. Please check last train times for your journey:

  • Richmond/Clapham Junction to Stratford
  • Highbury & Islington to Crystal Palace/West Croydon
  • Liverpool Street to Enfield Town/Chingford
  • There will also be reduced services from Liverpool Street to Enfield Town/Chingford with trains not stopping at Bethnal Green, Cambridge Heath, London Fields, Hackney Downs and Clapton.

All other London Overground lines will run a Sunday frequency service but some train times may change. Please check before you travel.

Planned engineering works

On Sunday 31 December, there will be no service on the following routes:

  • Gospel Oak to Barking, for more information visit www.tfl.gov.uk/london-overground-closure
  • Romford to Upminster (until Monday 1 January 2018 – use bus 370 instead)
  • Edmonton Green and Cheshunt
  • Euston to Kilburn High Road until 12:15 and from 20:30

New Year Eve’s Closure

National Rail

Check National Rail’s Christmas and New Year page for information about all service changes on New Year’s Eve.

Industrial action is planned for Sunday 31 December on South Western Railway services. Find out more on South Western’s website.

There are also some major works which will affect Southeastern, Thameslink and Southern customers. More information about the change to services will be available on the Thameslink Programme website.


DLR

Between 23:45 on Sunday 31 December until 04:30 on Monday 1 January, DLR services will run a continuous service and travel will be free.

The DLR will run a normal Sunday service until 00:30, and then a service every 15 minutes throughout the night until 10:00 on Monday 1 January, between:

  • Bank and Lewisham
  • Stratford and Canary Wharf
  • Tower Gateway and Beckton
  • Bank and Woolwich Arsenal
  • Stratford International and Canning Town

Trams

Trams will be running a normal Sunday service throughout the day. Between 23:45 on New Year’s Eve and 04:30 on New Year’s Day, trams will run and be free. Trams will operate a special all-night Sunday service which will continue into Monday 1 January and will run every 30 minutes between:

  • Wimbledon and Beckenham Junction
  • Wimbledon and New Addington.

Driving

Road and bridge closures

To make way for the fireworks event, road and bridge closures will begin from 14:00 and all will reopen by 06:00 on Monday 1 January 2018.

We will include this year’s Metropolitan Police Service’s road closure map nearer to New Year’s Eve, please check again.

From 14:00:

  • Westminster Bridge will be closed in both directions
  • Victoria Embankment closed in both directions from Southwark Bridge to Bridge Street
  • Parliament Square, Whitehall and Millbank from Parliament Square to Lambeth Bridge, Victoria Street from Parliament Square to Buckingham Gate will also be closed
  • The Southbound bus lane on Waterloo Bridge will be restricted and as a result slow moving traffic is expected in the area

From 17:00:

Closures around Chichley Street and Belvedere Road on the south side of the Thames.

From 19:30:

Waterloo Bridge, including the Kingsway underpass

From 20:00:

Full closure of central London – the boundaries are:

  • Vauxhall Bridge Road in the west
  • Southwark Bridge in the east
  • Oxford Street in the north
  • Elephant and Castle in the south

Also:

  • Roads around St Paul’s and Mansion House in the City of London will be closed
  • Additional roads to the east at Tower Hill may also need to be closed

Re-opening times

Roads will re-open by 06:00 on Monday 1 January 2018, but some road closures will stay in effect for the New Year’s Day Parade until 18:00. See the New Year’s Day page for more.

Roadworks

The Congestion Charge and T-Charge won’t apply today. See the travel advice for road users page for expected traffic from roadworks over the festive period.

Roadworks include:

  • Highbury Corner Bridge: A1 Holloway Road closed in both directions between Highbury Corner roundabout and Digswell Street. Local access arrangements necessary and routes on diversion
  • Chelsea Embankment works: Chelsea Embankment will be closed to westbound traffic from Chelsea Bridge Road to Beaufort Street

Buses

  • A Sunday service
  • Extra night services
  • Buses in London will be busier than usual, especially at night. Please leave plenty of time for your journey

Between 23:45 and 04:30 on New Year’s Day there will be free travel on buses. From around 14:00 on Sunday 31 December until around 06:00 on Monday 1 January 2018 buses in and around central London will start to be diverted or will terminate earlier than usual as a result of the event road closures.

If you travel by bus and are not planning on attending the fireworks event, you should consider making your journey before 14:00 to avoid event road closures and bus diversions;

The following bus routes will be diverted or will stop short of their destination due to the significant road closures to facilitate the New Year’s Eve fireworks in central London:

  • 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 29, 36, 38, 45, 52, 53, 55, 59, 63, 68, 73, 76, 77, 82, 87, 88, 91, 94, 98, 100, 134, 139, 148, 159, 168, 170, 171, 172, 176, 185, 188, 211, 242, 243, 341, 344, 360, 381, 388, 453, 507, C2, C10, N1, N2, N3, N5, N8, N9, N11, N13, N15, N16, N18, N19, N20, N21, N22, N26, N29, N38, N41, N44, N55, N63, N68, N73, N87, N89, N91, N97, N98, N109, N113, N136, N155, N171, N199, N207, N253, N279, N343, N381, N550, N551 and RV1.

From 18:30, buses will run from the following bus hubs located outside of the event area:

  • Elephant & Castle – towards South and South East London
  • Green Park – towards West and South West London
  • Holborn – towards North and East London
  • Hyde Park Corner – towards North, West and South London
  • Imperial War Museum – towards South London
  • Marble Arch – towards North, West and South London
  • Oxford Circus – towards North and North West London
  • Tottenham Court Road – towards North London
  • Vauxhall – towards South and South East London
  • Victoria – towards North, West and South London

Sunday night schedules will operate on all 24 hour and night bus routes on New Year’s Eve, a Sunday service will be operating on New Year’s Day. Selected day routes will also run overnight throughout London.

Buses close to the event area are likely to be busier than usual, please allow plenty of time for your journey and plan ahead.

Coaches

Victoria Coach Station is always very busy at this time of year, so please allow plenty of time to travel. On most services you will require a reserved seat to travel, so please book your tickets as early as possible.

Due to the event road closures in central London, the National Express A7 from Victoria to Stansted Airport will not stop at Waterloo or Southwark between 19:00 on Sunday 31 December and 07:00 on Monday 1 January. Passengers should make their way to Victoria Coach Station during these times.

Plan ahead by contacting your coach operator to check your journey.


Taxis & minicabs

Taxis (black cabs), minicabs and other private hire services provide a 24/7 service in the Capital throughout the Christmas period.

There is an extra charge of £4.00 for taxi journeys made between 20:00 on Sunday 31 December and 06:00 on Monday 1January.

Some taxi and minicab journeys may take longer on New Year’s Eve because of road closures in place for the fireworks display in central London so make sure you allow plenty of time for your journey.

Due to the road closures required for New Year’s Eve fireworks and New Year’s Day parade, the following docking stations will be suspended from 18:00 on Friday 29 December until 18:00 on Monday 1 January 2018:

Santander Cycles app

The Santander Cycles App for Android and iOS smartphones is free to download for both members and casual users. In addition to viewing the nearest docking station and bike availability, the App sends a bike release code straight to a user’s phone, which means hiring a Santander cycle without having to use the docking station terminal.

Walking

Pedestrians won’t be able to cross:

  • Victoria Embankment between Bridge Street and Northumberland Avenue – from 12:00
  • Westminster Bridge – from 14:00
  • Jubilee Bridge – from 16:00
  • Waterloo Bridge – from 16:00
  • Lambeth Bridge – from 20:00
  • Restricted access to St James’s Park – all roads closed from 14:00

You may have to use the Tube to reach the opposite side of the river, but there will be signs in place to help you get around.

River services

River services will be chargeable at the normal price; tickets must be purchased before boarding either via the boat operators’ websites or at pier ticket offices. Oyster pay as you go and contactless are accepted on MBNA Thames Clippers services and offer a lower rate fare.

Weekend service with early finishes on RB1 and RB2:
